Day 1 – Field visit to Cumbria Energy Coast

We departed Liverpool bright and early for a long but interesting day touring West Cumbria. We visited Seascale beach to discuss the environmental monitoring programmes that operate around Sellafield, which loomed in the background beyond the dunes.

The beach at Seascale. Annual monitoring records radioactivity levels in sediments and individual particles. However overall levels are not significantly above background.

We were then hosted by the Dalton Cumbrian Facility and NNL Workington for two interesting tours of these world-class specialist nuclear science and engineering facilities.

DCF Director of Operations Kevin Warren led a tour of the ion beam facility.
